Bowen Technique & Emmett Technique

During her deeply relaxing treatments she looks to release tension in the body’s fascia, muscles and other soft tissue using a combination of these techniques to reduce pain and improve mobility and function leaving you feeling better physically, mentally and emotionally. Some of the conditions that have responded well to treatment include - back and hip pain, neck & shoulder restrictions/discomfort, anxiety, sciatic pain, postural issues, migraines and headaches.

The Emmett Technique
The Emmett Technique is a unique form of body relaxation therapy for both people and animals involving the application of light finger pressure at specific points. It is based on the belief that light touch can trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissues of the body and that the therapist may thereby help relieve feelings of tension. Many people find they feel more at ease within their body and their emotional well being is enhanced.

The result is often instantaneous feelings of greater comfort. The Emmett Technique is a complimentary therapy which can be applied in isolation or easily combined with all other bodywork and exercise specialties such as Bowen therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, yoga and Pilates and personal training. People can be treated while sitting, standing or lying down and either through light clothing or directly on to the skin.

The relaxing nature of the technique results in people reporting typically:
  • Improved comfort and ease within the area treated such as backs, legs, knees, ankles, feet, shoulders, arms, hands and neck.
  • More restful sleep
  • Enhanced mood
  • A sense of lightness within their body

Scar Release Work
Scar Release Work, often used in conjunction with the above techniques, is used to improve the health and feel of scars from surgery, such as c-sections, or accidents. After treatment clients often comment that their scars feel softer, mobility has improved and they feel less pain. Although improvement after just one session seems to be lasting, generally a series of treatments is most effective.

Using Sharon Wheeler’s scar massage techniques, ScarWork treatment is very gentle and is used to treat scars caused by accidents, surgery or burns. It can improve feeling and functionality in the scar and surrounding tissues, creating better movement between the layers of the skin, fascia and muscle. Many people don’t realise that scar tissue forms internally as well as where the mark is left on the skin’s surface and that this can cause restrictions to movement and possible pain. Everything in the body is connected by fascia and so an issue in one part of the body will cause a ripple effect through the rest of the body affecting structure and function. During a ScarWork session the restrictions in the scar itself and/or the adhesions generated by the scarring, are freed up and there will be a release of tension throughout the body. This should take the strain off of joints, limbs, vertebrae etc and let the body rebalance, normally improving posture and mobility. Releasing fascial restriction of nerves can also help with pain relief and restore feeling to areas of numbness.

During this relaxing treatment the underlying scar, any adhesions and the visible scars will be treated. After treatment clients often comment their scars feel softer, mobility has improved and they feel less pain. Although improvement after just one session seems to be lasting, generally a series of treatments is most effective to fully integrate scar tissue with healthy tissue. ScarWork is effective on any scar no matter how old and is carried out within the pain guidelines of the body by asking for client feedback so that if there is any discomfort during a session touch, angle and/or technique can be adapted accordingly. All treatments will incorporate other soft tissue work to help rebalance and release tension in the body where necessary.

The many benefits of a ScarWork treatment include:
  • A decrease in scar tissue build-up
  • Improved blood-flow, which promotes healing and the scar’s pliability
  • Drains excess fluid to reduce swelling
  • Helps regain feeling in the area and decrease in numbness, tingling and soreness
  • Increased range of movement and the scar’s flexibility
  • Improved appearance of the scar
  • Integrates the scar tissue with surrounding healthy tissue in appearance and feel

A ScarWork treatment will generally last between 60-90 minutes depending on the size of the scar.

A Beginners Guide to Cloth Nappies

Interested in cloth nappies but have no idea where to start? Here's my brief run down of what you need to know.... Why go washable? Advantages: Cost - £200-300 vs £3000 Less waste - when they've finished their life they can go to fabric recycling.  Better for the environment - especially if you don’t tumble dry the energy and environmental impact is much lower  Fewer leaks - much less poo up the back!  Natural fibres - less chemicals (recent French study on chemicals in disposable nappies) Breathable - better for skin? Most anecdotal evidence claims less nappy rash. Studies limited but definitely support it being no worse than disposables.  Disadvantages? More washing? Only 1 load every 2 days and you’re washing LOADS anyway! Messier? Not really. Changing a disposable poo can get everywhere. With washables you’re organised and everything goes in the loo / bin / washing machine without needing to be handled any more than a disposable.  Smelly? Actually les

What on earth is this ‘eco event box'?

It all started with a message from a mum new to the area. Did I know where she could hire a reusable party kit from? ‘A what?’ I asked. Five minutes of googling later and I knew this was something Tea, Cake and Parenting should be doing. As the Eco Event Box is new to Tea, Cake and Parenting and honestly a completely new idea to Madeleine and I, I thought I’d run down the quick what, where, when, why and how of it all! What? A party in a box! Rather than buying a lot of disposable plates and cups for your kids party, you can hire a set of up to 36 colourful IKEA kids plates, cups, bowls and cutlery. You can also borrow serving dishes, platters and even a set of 12 adult plates and wine glasses. All reusable plastic. Where? Simply collect from Cat’s house (SW14 8BZ) and return in when you’re done. When? Whenever you want it. Just check availability with us and arrange pick and collection at a mutually convenient time with Cat. Why? Rather than throwing away a bag of paper or plastic
